Recovery isn’t just about rest days or lying around doing nothing. It’s about giving your body and mind the tools they need to repair, recharge, and come back stronger. A combination of supplements and mindful practices like yoga and meditation can significantly enhance recovery from workouts and daily stress.
Supplements That Support Recovery
Glutamine plays a key role in muscle recovery and immune support. After intense training, glutamine levels can drop, which may slow down recovery and increase fatigue. Supplementing with glutamine may help reduce muscle soreness, support gut health, and improve overall recovery, especially for those training at higher intensities or volumes. Glutamine is generally considered safe and is best taken upon rising or post-workout. It’s easy to take in powder form mixed into a glass of water, with 5g being the recommended dosage.
Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for recovery, and we’ve talked about it a lot in past newsletters. It supports muscle relaxation, reduces cramping, and helps regulate the nervous system. Magnesium also plays a critical role in sleep quality, which is when the majority of physical recovery happens. For those who train regularly, ensuring adequate magnesium intake can lead to better sleep, fewer muscle tightness issues, and improved performance over time. Magnesium Citrate, Glycinate, and Malate are considered some of the best forms for recovery. I personally like taking a magnesium complex that combines all three in one daily capsule for convenience.
L-theanine, an amino acid commonly found in tea, is known for its calming effects on the brain. It promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness, making it especially helpful for managing stress and improving focus. When it comes to recovery, L-theanine may help lower cortisol levels and support a more balanced mental state. It can be taken any time of day and is generally considered safe and well tolerated. I usually look for capsules or soft gels when choosing an L-theanine supplement.
Pairing Recovery With Mindful Practices
Pairing these supplements with yoga and meditation creates a powerful recovery routine. Yoga can help increase blood flow to muscles, improve flexibility, and reduce stiffness, all while activating the parasympathetic, or “rest-and-digest,” nervous system. Meditation complements this by calming the mind, reducing stress, and improving sleep quality. Together, they help shift your body out of constant “go mode” and into a state where true recovery can occur. Aim for at least two sessions of each per week. Even just 5–10 minutes can be tremendously helpful for recovery.
Incorporating glutamine, magnesium, and L-theanine alongside regular yoga and meditation may help you recover faster, sleep better, and feel more balanced both physically and mentally.
