Do you know what THC and CBD really do for your workouts, recovery and fat loss?
Cannabis products across the board are starting to be a lot more mainstream and less taboo. There’s still a lot of confusion around how it actually affects your performance, recovery, and weight loss.
The key distinction comes down to these two compounds:
THC and CBD.
While they both interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, they produce very different outcomes when it comes to your fitness goals.
Let’s talk THC first!
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound in cannabis(marijuana). THC is the one responsible for the “high” feeling we all know best. While it can feel relaxing or even motivating in some cases, its impact on performance is where things get tricky.
Research consistently shows that THC does not enhance performance. Actually, it’s often shown to do the opposite:
• Reduced strength and endurance
• Lower coordination and reaction time
• Increased perception of effort (workouts feel harder)
All in all, you’re likely to train less effectively, even if you feel more “in the zone.”
One of THC’s biggest drawbacks for fat loss is its effect on hunger. You know… the muchies.
By activating the body’s appetite pathways, THC can:
• Increase cravings
• Make food more rewarding
• Lead to overeating, making fat loss harder.
THC does offer some recovery benefits:
• Reduced muscle soreness and pain perception
• Increased relaxation post-workout
• Faster sleep onset
• However, frequent use may disrupt deeper stages of sleep, which are critical for full recovery.
Best time to use/take THC
• Avoid taking it before workouts (performance drops)
• Use it after training for relaxation
• Plan meals ahead of time to avoid overeating
So what about CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is the non-psychoactive part, meaning it doesn’t impair your thinking or physical performance. Its role in fitness is much more supportive than disruptive.
CBD is considered performance-neutral:
• No boost in strength or endurance
• No negative effect on coordination or output
However, it may help:
• Reduce anxiety or pre-workout nerves
• Improve focus by promoting a calm state.
Where CBD is most useful is actually in recovery:
• May reduce inflammation and soreness
• Supports relaxation and stress management (CBD creams for muscle soreness are 👌🏻)
• Can improve sleep quality (especially if stress is a factor)
• Better sleep alone can significantly improve fat loss, muscle retention, and overall performance.
CBD may also help with:
• Joint discomfort
• Minor aches and pains
• This can make it easier to stay consistent, which is one of the biggest drivers of long-term results.
