What is Pre-Workout and Do You Need It?

Pre-Workout Drinks at the gym

I’m sure you’ve had a day at one point where you needed to go to the gym to do your workout but you just didn’t have the energy or hype to go. The solution often times is a pre-workout supplement!

A pre-workout supplement is a combination of supplements in one handy scoop really that boosts your energy, your focus and helps you with building muscle by allowing you to push harder and longer before fatiguing.

Most “pre’s” contain ingredients like caffeine, beta-alanine, and nitric oxide boosters to help increase alertness, delay fatigue, and improve blood flow during exercise.

Caffeine: I think most of us are pretty experienced with this one. It wakes you up and keeps you alert and focused.

Beta-alanine: Is an acid buffer that helps your muscles to delay fatigue and push just a little bit further than you normally could When you lift close to failure and you get that burning sensation and brief pain from exertion, beta-alanine helps with that. You might expect to feel warm, or itchy, or tingly but it’s normal and temporary really lasting no more than 20-30 min.

Nitric-oxide: Relaxes and widens your blood vessels, it’s also naturally occurring in your body. When your blood vessels widen more blood and nutrients can get to your muscles quicker. Most people appreciate this ingredient for, “the pump” feeling. You know, it’s that swollen fullness feeling you get in your muscles after a good lift!

Now, do you need a pre-workout? No, you don’t need a pre-workout to have an effective workout. Consistent training, proper nutrition with good meal timing, adequate hydration, and enough sleep will do just fine.

Pre-workout can be helpful on days when energy is low or motivation is lacking, but it’s 100% optional and definitely not necessary for your success!
